Current Events Report 3: Fukushima

CER3

Today, exactly twenty-five years ago the Chernobyl nuclear disaster caused devastating damage that was unprecedented with regard to health and the environment. Last month, another nuclear disaster occurred, this time at Fukushima nuclear plant, which, although different in terms of its causes, dynamics and immediate impact, was assigned the same level within the international scale of nuclear incidents. Once again the world reflects on the challenges and necessary improvements of nuclear safety.

IB Consultancy prepared a report on the challenges that nuclear safety and security faces. In the historical context, it proves that Chernobyl and Fukushima are not entirely unique cases. But the lessons here significantly demonstrate that there is a strong need for drastic changes within nuclear safety and security culture. The nuclear disaster in Japan should be considered the second wakeup call: it is time to further strengthen the existing international nuclear safety regime to ensure better safety and security standards.
